Spatial thinking ...
06.04.2016 by sidoI just discovered alexithymia last week and was really amazed about how many of quirks and aphorisms of self this helps explain. It was an extraordinary discovery for me and got me thinking about how it might be related to other aspects of my personality/quirks.
One in particular I was wondering about is spatial thinking. The alexithymia article on Wikipedia (let's face it, there doesn't seem to be a lot of literature out there available), suggests one of the defining characteristics is a "constricted imaginal processes, as evidenced by a scarcity of fantasies". I don't feel like I have a deficit of fantasies, though mine are exclusively of the pragmatic kind, i.e. where am I going to go for dinner tomorrow or what kind of boat would I buy if I won Powerball and never the, "I'm going to ride a mythical pegasus over the rainbow." type. I do, however, have a definite lack of ability to visualize spatial descriptions. Someone giving me driving directions, after the first turn or maybe two, might as well be saying blah, blah, blah. The same goes for describing something spatial like how a room will look if the furniture is moved. I'm not able to visualize the description until I see it. The same thing happens if someone is describing the function of a machine or system or parts and how they interact together; mind goes dead blank!
I'm curious to know of others here experience this and can relate or if that might just be some quirk unrelated to alexithymia?
Problem solving

Yes, your "fantasies" are like mine, the "problem solving" kind. I just realized, I never fantasize about anything. Except how I WISH I had handled something, or how I THINK I will handle something if it happens.
Trouble is, when I try to "rehearse" in my head, the script gets changed, and I don't get an updated copy, and I'm left hanging.
Glad I didn't want to be an undercover detective, I would never have made it.
Spacial Thinking

Hi. Just joined the forum. My score is way high. I am very comfortable with spatial thinking. 3D puzzles are a breeze to me usually and I find navigation easy. I also have no problem with people decribing spatial things either. People themselves on the other hand, socially, emotionally and so on are a huge problem. (Like a Sheldon Cooper if you will.)
I can't fold the boxes in my head...

You know those "tests" where they show boxes flattened out and you have to ascertain how they look folded? I can't do that. That is part of "spatial thinking."

Hi DXS. I like the puzzles that show you 3 different 3d shapes and a flat out template, & you have to say which 3d object it makes. I can do them very quickly. I rekon that it's possibly unrelated to Alex. :)
Spatial thinking

I have scored very high and find spatial thinking quite easy. If someone read dimensions of a room or some other technical drawing I could construct it in my mind. From everything I've read there are some comorbid traits or disorders with alexi but it is not very deterministic.
